The Nourishing Hearthfire

From the homestead

Daffodils are blooming, the wattle trees are turning the hills yellow with beautiful flowers, the plants around us are bursting into life, and the soil smells alive and full of potential.

I can get caught up in the garden for a long time, feeling like there is nothing in the world I’d rather be doing. These days I have to be more conscious not to over-do the work, to take it all a bit more slowly, taking time to have a break, take in the surroundings, smell the soil, and hear the songs of the birds.

Outside the homestead, this month sees the launch of Sourdough Without Fail, and me stepping a bit outside my comfort zone, doing my first ever book signing later this month.

To balance that out, there’s lots of gardening, learning more about bees, and I’ll be hanging out on Permies next week to answer sourdough questions and do a book giveaway. If you’d like to be notified when the giveaway is live, sign up to the Permies daily-ish email.

The Nourishing Hearthfire From the homestead A few years ago we found an injured robin somewhere near our house. We didn’t hold out much hope for him, but we put him into a barrel full of logs to see if a safe quiet place would help him recover. A couple of days later, he was up and flying again, and he would come back to visit our house every so often, coming way closer to the house than any other robin. On the first day of August he visited us again. It feels like an early spring. After...

The Nourishing Hearthfire From the homestead Last month the sun sank to its lowest point on the horizon here, and this month we are aware of the growing light, the growing sunshine, and the coming growing season. In drafting this email I’ve been writing about about connecting with natural cycles and disconnecting from technology. What I wrote ended up being too long to send out to you in full, so I’ve posted the rest of this on the blog. Read more about light and dark, technology, and...

The Nourishing Hearthfire Welcome to the first email for the new Nourishing Hearthfire mailing list. If you’ve received this, you were either subscribed to the old mailing list, or had said ‘yes’ to the mailing list question on my cheese book Kickstarter survey 3 years ago (yes, I am a bit slow with these things!), or you’ve found this through my Floury Friday sourdough mailing list. If you are no longer interested in receiving these emails, there is an unsubscribe link at the end of this...
