The Nourishing Hearthfire

From the homestead

Everything outside looks so green and alive. We’re in our peak planting season and we aim to finish planting the potatoes and root vegetables this month. Next month pretty much everything can be planted here.

A couple of weeks ago I held a frame full of bees in my hands for the first time and loved it. We are getting our own bees soon and I can't wait!

If you bake bread, a home grain mill can help save money and make your food supply more resilient. Here are my thoughts on hand-crank mills, electric mills, mixer attachment mills, and everything about grain mills.

This isn’t a conventional newsletter, so I'm not going to clog up your inbox with sales pitches… If you’re interested in sourdough, I’d love it if you could buy my book or request it at your local library, here’s the link.

The Nourishing Hearthfire From the homestead Daffodils are blooming, the wattle trees are turning the hills yellow with beautiful flowers, the plants around us are bursting into life, and the soil smells alive and full of potential. I can get caught up in the garden for a long time, feeling like there is nothing in the world I’d rather be doing. These days I have to be more conscious not to over-do the work, to take it all a bit more slowly, taking time to have a break, take in the...

The Nourishing Hearthfire From the homestead A few years ago we found an injured robin somewhere near our house. We didn’t hold out much hope for him, but we put him into a barrel full of logs to see if a safe quiet place would help him recover. A couple of days later, he was up and flying again, and he would come back to visit our house every so often, coming way closer to the house than any other robin. On the first day of August he visited us again. It feels like an early spring. After...

The Nourishing Hearthfire From the homestead Last month the sun sank to its lowest point on the horizon here, and this month we are aware of the growing light, the growing sunshine, and the coming growing season. In drafting this email I’ve been writing about about connecting with natural cycles and disconnecting from technology. What I wrote ended up being too long to send out to you in full, so I’ve posted the rest of this on the blog. Read more about light and dark, technology, and...
